Impact of Out-of-Pocket Costs on Catastrophic Healthcare Expenditures
Abstract
The right to health is one of the fundamental rights of every citizen. Thus, in September 2015, the United Nations Member States agreed to achieve by 2030 17 sustainable development goals, including one aiming to ensure healthy lives and promote population wellbeing of all ages through universal health coverage.1
Several organizations have recognized that ensuring access to health services for all—without causing financial hardship—is crucial for sustainable economic growth and development. Similarly, access to medicines is a fundamental component of the right to realizing this goal of equitable healthcare for all.
