OBJECTIVES: Caregiver burden associated with neurological conditions can be substantial, with potential impacts on health care costs, productivity, and quality of life. This study aims to conduct a targeted literature review (TLR) to understand how caregiver burden is included in published economic models for neurological conditions. This abstract complements a previous TLR that examined the inclusion of caregiver burden in health technology assessments of neurology treatments (presented at ISPOR North America 2025 [abstract ID 5167]).
METHODS: A TLR is being conducted based on Population, Intervention, Comparator, Outcome, and Study (PICOS) criteria which includes patients with diagnosed neurological conditions documented in articles published from November 2019 onwards in MEDLINE. The search was not limited by specific interventions or comparators. Economic models (i.e., cost-effectiveness, cost-utility, cost-minimization, and cost-consequence analyses) for neurological conditions that included caregiver costs and/or utilities outcomes were eligible for inclusion. The search strategy was developed by an information specialist and study selection will be conducted in two stages (title/abstract and full-text screening) using the DistillerSR SLR software.
RESULTS: Single screening of 4,160 titles and abstracts was conducted, and 539 articles will be screened at the full-text level. The TLR evaluated the inclusion of caregiver costs and utilities, whether in the base case or in scenario analyses, along with methods for incorporating these elements. The results from this TLR of neurological economic models will be presented at the conference.
CONCLUSIONS: The information leveraged from the TLR will provide a summary of how published literature details the inclusion of caregiver burden within neurological economic models. Furthermore, the findings from this review can offer insights into the application and methodological considerations for incorporating caregiver cost and utilities into future economic models for neurological conditions.
