The Effectiveness of an Individualized eHealth Application on Glycemic Control in Diabetes Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

OBJECTIVES: Diabetes management often requires tailored interventions to optimize glycemic control. This study investigates the effectiveness of an individualized eHealth application designed to enhance diabetes care. We aimed to examine the health outcomes of individuals who utilized the Health Management Module of an individualized electronic application compared to those who did not.
METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted with 165 subjects, with 82 assigned to the control group and 83 to the intervention group. Randomization was performed using a computer randomizer to evaluate the impact of the eHealth chronic disease management module on clinical outcomes, including blood pressure (BP), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), renal function tests, estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR), and urine albumin/creatinine ratio (urine ACR). Key outcomes included changes in body mass index (BMI), BP levels, HbA1c, urine albumin/creatinine ratio, and other clinical markers from baseline to the follow-up visit at 4 months.
RESULTS: After 4 months, the intervention group demonstrated improved glycemic control, with significantly lower mean HbA1c levels (6.78% ± 0.64) compared to the control group (7.06% ± 0.80, p = 0.019). Additionally, 75.95% (60) of the intervention group achieved optimal HbA1c levels, in contrast to 58.75% (47) in the control group.
CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrates the effectiveness of an individualized eHealth application in improving short-term glycemic control among diabetes patients. The findings support the integration of personalized digital health tools in clinical practice for patients with suboptimal glycemic control. Further research is warranted to explore long-term outcomes and broader applications of such interventions.
