A Bibliometric Analysis to Estimate the Reach and Impact of the Peterson Health Technology Institute's Digital Health Value Assessments

OBJECTIVES: Since its creation in 2023, the Peterson Health Technology Institute (PHTI) has published three reports assessing the value of digital health technologies (DHTs), triggering new conversations about DHT evidence standards among payers and manufacturers. This study sought to quantify the reach and impact of the PHTI’s reports and infer how the institute is influencing the digital health landscape.
METHODS: A targeted search using Google and Google Scholar was conducted in December 2024 using ‘Peterson Health Technology Institute’ or ‘PHTI’ as search terms. Results were extracted into an Excel® spreadsheet and analyzed to determine the category, purpose, sentiment, and target audience (location and role) of each result.
RESULTS: Between June 2023 and December 2024, the PHTI was mentioned 80 times across relevant Google search results. Content types included trade news publications (66%) specializing in digital health, healthcare IT and the healthcare market, and blogs (34%) authored by digital health manufacturers, medical associations and non-profit organizations. The audience was largely US based, but many outlets had global reach. Target audiences included senior healthcare leaders, payers, investors, clinicians, and DHT manufacturers. The sentiment of results was mostly neutral/factual, yet both positive and critical perceptions of the PHTI were expressed. The PHTI was mentioned or cited 17 times in the academic literature. PHTI’s resources were mainly used to inform review articles and posters assessing the digital health landscape generally, as well as specific studies examining digital technologies in diabetes and hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS: PHTI’s reports have obtained global reach and are analyzed by both DHT purchasers and manufacturers through high profile channels. Reports were amplified more through public communication channels rather than in academic literature. It is unclear as yet how DHT manufacturers are using information to inform evidence generation, nor how payers are using reports to inform decisions.
