OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the perceived clinical outcomes, practice benefits, and patient satisfaction associated with wavelight plus, a novel laser vision correction technology, which uses a personalized 3D eye model to create a patient-specific ablation profile. The research explored its effectiveness in addressing unmet needs, overcoming adoption challenges, enhancing patient experiences, and potential economic impact in diverse settings in China.
METHODS: Four prominent ophthalmologists across China, each with wavelight plus experience and 5-16 years in refractive surgeries were interviewed. A structured interview guide on clinical outcomes, surgical process improvements, and patient feedback was developed. Data included quantitative measures of visual acuity and qualitative assessments of practitioner and patient experiences.
RESULTS: All four surgeons agreed that wavelight plus delivered superior clinical results compared to previous technologies. Nearly all patients achieved 20/20 vision or better, with approximately 85% achieving 1.2 visual acuity, an improvement over traditional methods. Notably, patients experienced significant enhancements in night vision, with reduced glare and halos, and faster recovery times compared to traditional methods. Four of four surgeons noted that wavelight plus showed high patient satisfaction rates, with many reporting substantial increases in referrals. For example, in one clinic, approximately 60% of patients were referred by others who had undergone the procedure. While wavelight plus surgeries require additional time due to advanced diagnostic evaluations, surgeons noted improved precision and 0% re-enhancement rates. Despite its higher cost—ranging from RMB 20,000 to RMB 31,900 depending on the clinic—the increased visual quality justified the investment for many patients. Challenges included potential patient economic constraint, and the need for surgeon training.
CONCLUSIONS: Wavelight plus significantly enhances perceived clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Its personalized technology provides tailored treatments for the unique needs for every eye that improve visual acuity and night vision, positioning it as a valuable innovation in refractive surgery.
