ASSESSING THE ECONOMIC BURDEN OF PROSTATE CANCER IN UGANDA

OBJECTIVES: Despite advancements and improvements in cancer care typically experienced by developed economies in the recent decades, the cascade of these benefits to developing economies has been slow. As such, conditions such as prostate cancer continue to substantially impact health systems and populations of countries like Uganda. This study assessed the burden of prostate cancer in Uganda. METHODS: This was retrospective analysis of data abstracted from medical records of prostate cancer patients across three private cancer centers and two cancer referral hospitals in five districts in Uganda (i.e., Kampala, Wakiso, Gulu, Mbarara, and Jinja). Abstracted data focused on economic and clinical burden of disease, and analyses were descriptive.
