Value in Health Supplement Reports Findings of Third Annual ISPOR Summit

Lawrenceville, NJ, USA—June 18, 2019—Value in Health, the official journal of ISPOR, the professional society for health economics and outcomes research, announced today the publication of a new supplement, “New Approaches to Value Assessment: Towards More Informed Pricing in Healthcare.” The 6 articles included in this supplement are based on presentations from the Third Annual ISPOR Summit held in Washington, DC, USA on October 19, 2018. Full text of the articles is freely available online and the supplement will be indexed in MEDLINE®/PubMed. The supplement, which was published in June 2019 along with the regular issue of Value in Health, extends the reach and expands access to important discussions about how healthcare stakeholders in the United States are assessing value in healthcare today and into the future.

In his introductory editorial, ISPOR’s Chief Science Officer Richard J. Willke, PhD describes the ongoing challenges of value assessment, provides a concise background of the Society’s recent initiatives on value assessment frameworks, and briefly summarizes the presentations that inform the articles:

The ISPOR Summit, “New Approaches to Value Assessment: Towards More Informed Pricing in Healthcare,” was convened to expand on the work of ISPOR’s Special Task Force on US Value Assessment Frameworks and its research agenda, as well as work from other related initiatives. The event provided a forum for researchers, regulators, payers, and other stakeholders to examine the current state of healthcare value assessment and its role in pricing and coverage decisions.

“Topics presented during this summit may have limited effects on practices today or in the short-term; improving how we measure value and make decisions is intrinsically a long-term effort,” said Dr Willke. “Nevertheless, I hope that some of the ideas presented at the summit and in this supplement will resonate with you, sparking experimentation and leading to long-term improvements to value assessment frameworks. Advances here are crucial for both today’s and tomorrow’s patients.”

ISPOR acknowledges and thanks the sponsors of this supplement: Evidera, the National Pharmaceutical Council, and the PhRMA Foundation.
