Society Continues to Strengthen Its Commitment to Patient Engagement in Healthcare Research and Decision Making
Lawrenceville, NJ, USA—May 7, 2018—
ISPOR, the professional society for health economics and outcomes research, announced the new chairs of its regional
Patient Representatives Roundtables and leadership of the recently established ISPOR
Patient Council. The Society
announced the establishment of its new Patient Council earlier this year, which reflects the Society’s long-standing commitment to engagement of patient representatives in healthcare research and decision making worldwide. The Patient Council will facilitate communication regionally among patient representatives, creating a global network for discussion, consensus building, and experience sharing around issues related to patient engagement in healthcare research. ISPOR Patient Council members will be comprised of the chairpersons of the Society’s regional Patient Representatives Roundtables.
New chairs include:
Jan Geissler, founder and CEO, Patvocates GmbH, Germany
Chair, ISPOR Patient Representatives Roundtable, Europe
Jan Geissler is the founder and CEO of
Patvocates, a think tank on patient advocacy, health policy, and social media. He was the Director of the
European Patients Academy (EUPATI) from 2012-2017 and manages the German EUPATI platform. Geissler is a work package leader of the new IMI2-funded
EU Project HARMONY on big data for better outcomes in hematology and is a patient representative in the
EuroBloodNet ePAG. A leukemia survivor since 2001, Geissler cofounded
LeukaNET/Leukaemie-Online.de in 2002, the
European Cancer Patient Coalition in 2003, the
CML Advocates Network in 2007, and the
Leukemia Patient Advocates Foundation in 2011. He represents patients on a number of advisory boards and committees (eg, ECCO, ESMO, EORTC, Berlin Institute of Health and the International CML Foundation) and is a member of the
EHA’s European Affairs Committee.
Angela Chaves, DDSc, MLIS, executive president, Colombian Federation of Rare Diseases
Chair, ISPOR Patient Representatives Roundtable, Latin America
Angela Chaves currently serves as executive president of the
Colombian Federation of Rare Diseases, founding member of Leukodystrophies Foundation (LAES), a member of the
ISPOR Colombia Regional Chapter board of directors, a participant in the Columbia National Health Ministry Rare Disease Table, and member of the
Advocacy Committee of Rare Disease International. Chaves’ experience with rare disease began when her daughter Lucia was diagnosed with a rare disease, metachromatic leukodystrophy
The newly announced chairs will be joining the following chairperson who has served for the past year:
Suzanne Schrandt, JD, director of patient engagement, Arthritis Foundation
Chair, ISPOR Patient Representatives Roundtable, North America
Suzanne Schrandt serves as director of patient engagement at the
Arthritis Foundation where she develops and leads the Foundation’s patient engagement strategy. Previously, she served as deputy director of patient engagement for the
Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) where she helped launch several key initiatives, including the creation of the Engagement Rubric and the Engagement Officer role, the Advisory Panel on Patient Engagement, the Pipeline to Proposal Awards initiative, the PCORI Ambassadors Program, and the Framework on Compensation (for Patient Partners in Research). Schrandt is one of 9 voting members of the US Food and Drug Administration’s inaugural
Patient Engagement Advisory Committee. Her previous professional roles include a number of positions in health and disability law and policy. Schrandt’s passion for patient engagement comes in large part from her own diagnosis with a rheumatic disease at age 14.
