OBJECTIVES

  1. To determine the unit cost of treating diabetic patient at Emergency Department in Muhimbili National Hospital
  2. To determine the unit cost of treating hypertensive patient at Emergency Department in Muhimbili National Hospital
  3. To determine the unit cost of treating trauma patient at the Emergency Department in Muhimbili National Hospital
  4. To determine the cost drivers for providing treatment to diabetic, hypertensive and trauma patients at the Emergency Department in Muhimbili National Hospital.
METHODS

A cross-sectional descriptive hospital-based study will be carried out from February to May 2020 in Emergency Department Muhimbili National Hospital Dar Es Salaam Tanzania. Mixed methods including costing of materials, diagnosis and invested time, patient’s electronic files and key informants will be the source of costing information. The WHO Non Communicable diseases costing tool will be used to collect patient’s costs of treatment information while key informants interview guide will be used to explore drivers of cost.

RESULTS

The results of the study may be used to understand the cost of treatment and use it for budgeting and pricing of treatment for Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension and Trauma at Emergency Department of Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania

CONCLUSIONS

There is a need for generating reliable estimates of unit cost for various services to aid in planning. Unit cost of service delivered by health workers is needed by researchers assessing the technical and allocative efficiency. Hence, cost information is required not only for fiscal planning, but also for making the right choices which yield the best value for money spent on health care.
