Session Featured Guest Speaker Renée Arnold
New Orleans, LA, USA—May 22, 2019—ISPOR, the professional society for health economics and
outcomes research (HEOR), held a session for its Women
in HEOR initiative yesterday late afternoon at its ISPOR
2019 annual conference in New
Orleans, LA, USA. ISPOR launched this initiative in late 2017 with the vision
to support the growth, development, and contribution of women in HEOR; to serve
as a catalyst for women’s leadership in the field; and to offer a platform for
ISPOR women to collaborate, network, share, and mentor each other.
Shelby D. Reed,
RPh, PhD moderated the session, spoke about the vision of the Women in HEOR initiative,
and noted the importance of advancing women’s leadership in the HEOR field. She
presented evidence that demonstrates how organizations with diverse teams
perform significantly better than those that lack diversity. Data also show,
however, that women account for less than a third (28.8%) of those employed in
scientific research and earn less (83%) than men in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Dr Reed shared
the topline results of the Society’s 2018 membership survey on the initiative.
The survey results highlighted the acute need for mentors and sponsors of women
in the field. Survey respondents identified the lack of mentors and role models
as their number one career barrier. More than half (51.8%) of respondents had
neither a mentor nor a sponsor in their careers.
The guest
speaker for the session was Renée Arnold, PharmD, RPh; Icon PLC, New York, NY,
USA who spoke on, “Mentors and Thought Leadership: Relationship Building for
Career Success.” Dr Arnold spoke about the power of women mentoring other
women. She also addressed ways that women in HEOR can develop as thought
leaders. Sharing personal stories from her career, Dr Arnold encouraged women
to “take the risk” with both mentorship and thought leadership.
ISPOR CEO and
Executive Director Nancy S. Berg provided an overview of diversity initiatives
at the Society. Ms Berg stressed that diversity is important not just because
it is the right thing to do, but because research has shown that diverse teams
and organizations have better performance than less diverse teams. As a global,
multistakeholder organization, ISPOR focuses on a wide variety of diversity
dimensions, including gender, career stage, ethnicity, race, education, and
more. ISPOR has been actively addressing diversity for a number of years with
positive metrics and trends for diversity with its board of directors,
councils, conference program committees, working groups, and staff. The Women
in HEOR initiative has been a natural outgrowth of these efforts.
ISPOR is
recognized globally as the leading professional society for health economics
and outcomes research and its role in improving healthcare decisions. ISPOR
2019 is the leading global HEOR conference and draws nearly 4000 healthcare
thought leaders and stakeholders, including researchers and academicians,
assessors and regulators, payers and policy makers, the life sciences industry,
healthcare providers, and patient engagement organizations.
