A Forecast For HEOR in the 2020s
New Orleans, LA, USA—May 21, 2019—ISPOR, the professional society for health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), explored the future of HEOR for the 2020s this afternoon at its ISPOR 2019 annual conference with the session [IP18], “Gazing Into the HEOR Crystal Ball: What Might Be the Future Directions for HEOR in the 2020s?”
Healthcare systems around
the world face many challenges as they seek to control budgets and prices while
improving efficiency and equity management controls. At the same time, demand
and expectations grow for healthcare systems to improve health outcomes and better
meet patient preferences.
Panelists for this session included:
- Moderator: Finn Børlum Kristensen,
MD, PhD; University of Southern Denmark; Hilleroed, Denmark
- Andrew Briggs, DPhil; University of Glasgow; Glasgow, Scotland, UK
- Nancy Devlin, PhD; University of Melbourne; Melbourne, Australia
- Ross Maclean, MD, PhD, MBA; Precision Health Economics; Los Angeles, CA,
USA
Moderator Dr Finn Børlum
Kristensen provided an overview of HEOR and the methods the field has
traditionally pursued. Each of the panelists offered contrasting perspectives
on the future of HEOR. Dr Devlin argued that more attention should be given to
the wider health economics issues relating to incentives and behaviors in the
system and to ways of enhancing performance. Dr Maclean focused his remarks on
outcomes research. He argued that the field of HEOR needs to do more to
facilitate measurement of a range of metrics that focus on value for both
consumers and decision makers. Dr Briggs argued for a “call to arms” for health
economists to engage with their non-economist colleagues to help them understand
the importance of rigorous economic approaches to defining value.
ISPOR is recognized globally as the leading
professional society for health economics and outcomes research and its role in
improving healthcare decisions. ISPOR 2019 is the leading global HEOR
