Explore stakeholder perspectives and methods in value-based pricing of medical innovation

This course is designed for healthcare professionals, policy makers, and industry stakeholders involved in the pricing and reimbursement of innovative medicines. It introduces the principles of value-based pricing from multiple stakeholder perspectives, highlighting the different criteria used to assess the value of medical innovation, from clinical and economic measures to broader societal and equity considerations.

Technical topics include:

  • Overview of stakeholder perspectives in value assessment, including regulators, payers, patients, clinicians, and employers.

  • Key concepts in value-based pricing, from ICER thresholds to broader economic valuation frameworks.

  • Methods of value assessment including incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICER), multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA), comparative effectiveness research (CER), and relative effectiveness (RE).

  • Differences in national and international pricing approaches, including payer vs. investor perspectives.

This course includes tools and concepts that can be immediately applied, including:

  • Real-world examples illustrating value assessment for orphan drugs, advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), and traditional innovative drugs.

  • Comparative frameworks for aligning payer expectations with pricing strategies.

  • Practical guidance on data requirements for supporting stakeholder-specific value assessments.

While prior knowledge of health economic evaluation is helpful, no background in economic valuation theory is required.
