OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to calculate the costs of chronic kidney disease(CKD) with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) according to the stages in Turkiye.

METHODS: The number of CKD with T2DM patients in Turkey and their distribution according to stages were obtained from expert opinions, Turkish epidemiological studies and reports published by Turkish Ministry of Health. An expert opinion form was created to calculate the economic burden of the disease. In the first part of the expert opinion form, there are epidemiological questions about CKD with T2DM. The second part of the form is about dialysis. The third part of the form is about the type of patient's application to the health institution (inpatient and outpatient) and the use of health resources (laboratory, follow-up, hospitalization and medication) according to the stages. For the cost calculations of the study, the cost of hemodialysis, and the cost of treatment (laboratory, hospitalization and medicines) for each stage were obtained from expert opinions.

RESULTS: As a result of the analyzes, the annual cost per patient at any stage in Turkey was found to be 30,920TL for CKD with T2DM. Annual costs per patient according to stages in CKD patients; was calculated as 11,926TL, 14,121TL, 26,155TL, 44,841TL, 89,849TL, 257,477TL, respectively stage I,II,III,IV,V, and V-D (dialysis). Kidney transplantation surgery cost was calculated as 161,507TL and follow-up cost as 100,508TL. The estimated number of patients with chronic renal failure with T2DM in Turkey has been calculated as 554,233. The economic burden of the disease was calculated as 17,380,266,972TL.

CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study show that the costs of stage V-D CKD with T2DM is quite high in Turkiye. It is very important from a clinical and economic point of view to control the treatment before the patients reach stage V-D.
