OBJECTIVES: The objective of this systematic review is to identify, categorize, and assess the effectiveness of various interventions designed to enhance the acceptance and use of generic drugs.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed using Scopus, Pubmed, and Embase for studies published between 2012 to 2025 in order to identify original full text research articles that assessed interventions targeting generic drug acceptance and uptake. Screening of studies was performed according to predefined inclusion/exclusion criteria. Three independent reviewers screened and extracted the data.
RESULTS: Out of 12,409 screened studies, 20 studies met the inclusion criteria for full-text review. Preliminary findings indicate that the main interventions showed a positive impact on generic medicine uptake are pharmacist-led educational programs, patient counseling sessions, prescriber-targeted academic detailing, generic substitution policies, formulary restrictions, financial incentives such as reduced copayments or vouchers, and electronic prescribing systems that prioritized generics. These interventions were associated with increased prescribing, dispensing, or acceptance of generic medicines across various healthcare settings.
CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review highlights the importance of context-specific, well-structured interventions in enhancing the adoption of generic medicines. Findings provide actionable insights for policymakers and healthcare systems aiming to improve cost-efficiency through increased use of generics.
