Editors-in-Chief Discuss Themes in and Evolution of HEOR

New Orleans, LA, USA—May 20, 2019—ISPOR, the professional society for health economics and outcomes research (HEOR), examined the past 20 years of scientific publications in HEOR this afternoon at its ISPOR 2019 annual conference with the spotlight session issue panel [SP2], “Back to the Future in Value in Health.”

Panelists for this session all served as editors-in-chief of the flagship ISPOR publication, Value in Health,and included:

• C. Daniel Mullins, PhD; University of Maryland; Baltimore, MD, USA
• Joel Hay, PhD; University of Southern California; Los Angeles, CA, USA
• Josephine Mauskopf, PhD; RTI Health Solutions; Research Triangle Park, NC, USA

Drs Drummond and Mullins are the current editors-in-chief of Value in Health. Drs Hay and Mauskopf each held the post of editor-in-chief during the founding and early development years of the journal. Dr Drummond moderated the session and set the stage with an overview of the past 20 years. The panelists noted that 3 major themes have dominated the content of Value in Health over the last 20 years.

1. The Notions of “Value” in Healthcare
   Dr Mullins noted that many papers have discussed the notion of “value” in health and healthcare, including the role of patient-reported outcomes, the construction and use of the quality-adjusted life-year, and the methods and application of the various preference-based measures.
2. Decision-Analytic Modeling
   Dr Hay discussed how decision-analytic modeling has been the predominant methodology in the empirical studies published in the journal. Published papers have also debated alternative types of models, including whether particular models are fit for purpose in decision making and the need for more validation and transparency in modeling.
3. HEOR in the Broader Context of Health Technology Assessment/Comparative Effectiveness Research
   Lastly, Dr Mauskopf outlined how a number of papers have explored the use of HEOR in the broader context of health technology assessment and comparative effectiveness research.
