“Access to Quality Medicines in Ethiopia: The Impact of Counterfeit Medications and The Role of Local Pharmaceutical Companies”: December 19-20, 2018
ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter held its second national symposium at the College of Medicine and Health Science Gondar. The event included 31 oral and poster presentations, 2 keynote speeches, as well an educational seminar. Close to 100 participants represented policy and decision makers, regulatory authorities, clinical researchers, public health experts, academicians, as well as representatives from local pharmaceutical companies.

The first National Workshop on “Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research in Ethiopia: Challenges and Opportunities” was organized by the ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter on Thursday, 22 December 2017 at the University of Gondar, Ethiopia.
The following members of the Ethiopian Chapter participated in the event:

The event’s presentations included the following topics:
- “YP-CDN, and the current status of NCD policies in East Africa: Opportunities for action from young peoples' Perspectives”
- “Target Organ Damage and the Long-Term Effect of Nonadherence to Clinical Practice Guidelines in Patients with Hypertension” presented by: Tadesse Melaku, Bpharm, MSc
- "Anti‑malarial treatment outcomes in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta‑analysis “ presented by: Mohammad Hassen, BPharm, MSc
Mr Begashaw M (president-elect of ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter), Mr Eyob A. (secretary of ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter), and Mr Sewunet (director for membership of ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter) participated in the closing discussion focusing on the chapter’s plans, including information on how to get involved and membership opportunities. Information about how to establish an ISPOR Student Chapter, and the project of creation of the “Center for Outcomes Research in Ethiopia-CORE” was also discussed.

New ISPOR Regional Chapter in Ethiopia
ISPOR Welcomes Ethiopia Chapter
ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter has been approved by the ISPOR Board of Directors on July 24, 2017. The chapter is joining the ISPOR Africa Network.
Daniel Asfaw Erku is the Chapter President. He is a lecturer and a clinical researcher of Pharmacy Practice and director for Community Pharmacy and Outreach Programs, School of Pharmacy, University of Gondar in Ethiopia. Daniel Asfaw Erku also serves as an academic advisor to undergarduate students at the School of Pharmacy, Gondar University. He is a member of antimicrobial stewardship team, co-director of Drug Information Services and associate editor of Drug Information Bulletin of the University of Gondar referral hospital.
ISPOR Ethiopia Chapter is planning to organize the first chapter meeting on 11 December 2017 in collaboration with the University of Gondar The main topics to be discussed will include:
__ISPOR and mission of the Ethiopian Chapter: objectives and future goals
__Pharmacoeconomics in Ethiopia: challenges and opportunities
__PE Unit: current concepts and perspectives
__Translating outcomes research to health care decisions in Ethiopia
__Integrated Healthcare
Well-known experts in health economics and outcomes research from Ethiopia will be invited to present at the meeting.
