Abstract

The first plenary session reviewed some of the current leading value frameworks and how they inform healthcare pricing decisions. While other sessions discussed future trends and novel approaches to value frameworks, this session reviewed the current state of value frameworks. Presenters discussed recent developments in value assessment, such as incorporating patient and societal perspectives into a broader value framework, the challenges in valuing potential cures and treatments for rare disorders, applications within cancer therapy assessments, and value-based contracting.

Three presenters representing 3 widely cited value frameworks—the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER), the Patient Perspective Value Framework (PPVF), and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO)—reviewed the most recent developments to their frameworks. While the ICER framework currently garners tremendous attention especially in the United States, the others warrant closer examination. The PPVF offers a patient-oriented perspective, whereas ASCO presents a clinician-oriented view. The final presentation within the session examined how payers currently apply these value frameworks.
