Minimally Important Differences for Preference-Weighted Health Measurement Scales: There Is Nothing Mystical About Them
Abstract
Measurement is a fundamental part of daily life—so routine, in fact,
that we often overlook it. Our awareness of measurement tends to depend,
in part, on how familiar and comfortable we are with the scales being
used. Through lived experience, we intuitively understand what it means
when the temperature drops by 3 or 5 degrees. Similarly, when gathering
quotes for a home renovation, the difference in price—regardless of
currency—is usually an important factor in our decision. In both cases,
we are drawing on our familiarity with the measurement scales
(temperature, currency), which over time become second nature to
interpret and apply in our decision making.
