Description

Over the past 40 years, the use of health technology assessment (HTA) has expanded, particularly in its influence on decisions about the reimbursement, adoption, and utilization of new drugs, devices, and procedures. In regions with "pluralistic" healthcare systems, where multiple payers or sectors exist, HTA could benefit various stakeholders. However, a centralized HTA may not fully address the distinct needs of these different groups, which may have varying budgets, standards of care, target populations, or decision-making procedures.

This webinar will focus on a 2022 publication from Value in Health focusing on the challenges of HTA in pluralistic healthcare systems and recommendations to overcome these challenges. Dr. Michael Drummond will provide an overview of the paper and recommendations. Dr. Federico Augustovski will discuss pluralistic healthcare systems in Latin America. Dr. Shankar Prinja will present on India’s pluralistic healthcare system. Dr. Ahmed Al-Jedai will focus on recent developments in Saudi Arabia and their pluralistic healthcare system. Speakers will then take questions from the audience and reflect on how the recommendations from this paper can help develop better HTA processes within their healthcare systems.

Learning Objectives

  • Summarize the results of a paper published by the HTA Council.
  • Identify ways to overcome some of the major barriers to establishing HTA in pluralistic healthcare systems.
