OBJECTIVES:

To determine the number of patients initiating AGLP1 in 2016.

To describe the criteria for prescription, especially by identifying secondary cardiovascular risk factors.

METHODS:

Constitution of a group of patients aged 45 years and older initiating AGLP1 therapy in 2016 based on SNIIRAM data. Patients hospitalised for gestational diabetes, bariatric surgery or end-stage renal disease in 2015 were also excluded.

RESULTS: Diabetes had been diagnosed 1 to 5 years before AGLP1 initiation for 27% of these patients.

Previous antidiabetic treatment comprised no more than a single agent for 22% of patients. AGLP1 prescription was initiated by a general practitioner in 40% of cases, a healthcare institution in 37% of cases and a private endocrinologist in 20% of cases.

CONCLUSIONS:

Use of AGLP1 in the management of diabetic patient appears to be relatively frequent and is sometimes initiated early in the history of the disease or as part of treatment intensification. Secondary cardiovascular prevention does not appear to be a criterion in the decision to initiate AGLP1 therapy. In view of the economic issues raised by this therapeutic class, French national health insurance should continue to promote effective prescription.
