SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE BURDEN OF PEDIATRIC MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS IN NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE

OBJECTIVES: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, neurodegenerative condition, that severely impacts functioning and quality-of-life (QoL). Although MS occurs most commonly in adults, it is also diagnosed in children and adolescents. Children may have a slower disease course, and evidence suggests that significant disability can accumulate at an earlier age compared to individuals with adult-onset MS. This systematic literature review identified data on the epidemiology, clinical, humanistic, and economic burden of pediatric MS in North America (NA) and Europe (EU), and identified data gaps and areas of focus for future research. METHODS: Searches of electronic databases (Ovid MEDLINE®, Embase, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, DARE, HTA Database and NHS EED) were used to identify articles that focused on pediatric MS patients and assessed at least one aspect of clinical, humanistic, or economic burden of the disease. PRISMA guidelines for the reporting of systematic reviews were followed. RESULTS:
