OBJECTIVES:

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a form of arthritis that affects some people who have psoriasis. Most people develop psoriasis first and are later diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis. In both conditions psoriasis and PsA, disease flares may alternate with periods of remission. According with previous publication, the prevalence of PsA in psoriatic patients vary depending on the definitions used in the studies, it fluctuates between 6%-41%

This study is aimed to describe the information available in public databases about the prevalence of PsA in psoriatic patients in Brazil, Chile and Colombia

METHODS:

Country specified databases were used in participant countries: Brazil (DATASUS); Chile (DEIS – Ministry of Health) and Colombia (SISPRO). PsA cases were identified with the International Disease Codes (ICD-10) M07.0, M07.3 and L40.5. Besides, Psoriasis was associated with ICD-10 L40.0-L40.5, L40.8 and L40.9. The period of analysis was 2010-2014.

The frequency of PsA cases in patients diagnosed with Psoriasis was estimated from the number of cases of PsA each year divided by the number of cases reported of psoriasis in each countries included in this analysis. These results were compared with the reports around the world.

RESULTS:

In the countries participants in average 34,333 patients diagnosed with psoriasis per year who required health care services were reported. From the Brazilian report which database includes hospital admissions there is estimated a PsA prevalence average of 49% in psoriatic patients. In the Chilean case which database includes hospital discharges in average 65% of the psoriatic patients has PsA. In the case of Colombia, which involves hospital admissions and discharges, 3-4% psoriatic patients were reported with PsA.

CONCLUSIONS:

The prevalence of PsA in psoriatic patients for the included countries is between 3% and 81%. However, it is important to consider the underreporting and that some databases only includes hospital discharges such as the Chilean case
