OPEN-SOURCE MODELS IN HEALTH ECONOMICS- EXPERIENCE BASED ON A DISCRETE EVENT SIMULATION MODEL IN MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER

OBJECTIVES: A discrete event simulation model was developed to estimate health and cost outcomes associated with alternative treatment strategies in major depressive disorder (MDD). We made the programs open-source in 2014, so that all researchers could check, use or update the programs on an ongoing basis. Our objective is here to report on the experience gained through this initiative. METHODS: An online platform was created, where researchers could download the programs as well as detailed technical information about the model. A moderated online forum was opened, where researchers could ask questions, provide comments, exchange information, share new input data. The model was published in Value in Health in 2014, with a link to the online platform. Five researchers who registered on the platform were interviewed to obtain feedback on the model and online platform. RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS: Although there is great interest in open-source modelling approaches, this project example suggests that there are currently some barriers preventing health economic researchers from actively contributing in such initiatives. We will continue to use the open MDD model in the future to explore how such barriers can be lifted and efforts from researchers can be partly redirected towards the development of core high-quality models rather than multiplication of limited models.
