OBJECTIVES: Antiretroviral therapy (ART) options have increased dramatically in the past decade and encompass diverse patient-relevant characteristics, including pill burden, food requirements, variable side effects, and several concerning long-term toxicities. The ESPRIT (Estimating HIV Patients´ Preferences to Inform Treatment) study evaluated patients´ preferences for these characteristics and highlights trade-offs patients make when given choices between regimens. METHODS: Between February and August 2017, 262 HIV-infected patients from Infectious Diseases clinics at Duke University and the University of South Carolina and 140 HIV-infected patients from a probability-based national sample (GfK KnowledgePanel) were surveyed. Using a discrete choice experiment, the relative importance of four ART attributes: (a) dosing, (b) administration, (c) most bothersome side effects (selected from: diarrhea, sleep problems, headaches, dizziness, depression, jaundice) and (d) most bothersome long-term effect (selected from: increased risk of heart attack, bone fracture, kidney problems, high cholesterol, high blood sugar) were explored. Respondents completed 16 choice tasks, each describing characteristics of 3 hypothetical regimens. Patients´ choices were analyzed in a random parameter logit model. RESULTS:
