HTA EDUCATIONAL NEEDS IN CENTRAL-EASTERN-SOUTH EUROPEAN (CESE) COUNTIRES – RESULTS OF JOC HTA PROJECT

OBJECTIVES: JoC HTA was ERASMUS+ KA2 Strategic Partnership Project 2015-1-TR01-KA203-022402 active in 2015-17 aiming to develop joint studies on HTA curriculum specific for needs of CESE countries. Thus assessment of these needs was among the main project objectives. METHODS: A sectoral needs for HTA specialists and student interest in HTA studies analysis was based on questionnaires for stakeholders and students posted online at www.jochta.net June-Aug 2016 and distributed via e-mail; partner universities invited academics, public and private sector representatives, students of various faculties to respond. RESULTS: Among 233 responders to students survey (6 countries: Poland 39%, Turkey 22%, Hungary 17%, Bulgaria 13%, UK 6%, Greece 3%) 31% were actual students of pharmacy, 16% medicine, 27% other healthcare fields, 26% social sciences and economics. 72% declared interest in international master’s program in HTA. Reasons behind: 55% - HTA will be an important topic in the future, 46% - HTA is interesting field of study, 36% - HTA master's degree provides attractive employment prospects, 36% HTA offers broad research opportunities. Quality of MSc HTA program was main criterion to apply for. Human resources needs in HTA were analysed in 11 countries (Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, Bosnia&Herzegovina, Croatia, Czech, Latvia, Slovakia, Solvenia, Ukraine) in 59 professionals; revealed that 71% institutions had unmet needs: namely 1 HTA expert (30%); 2 or 10 (20%); 3, 8, 15 people (10%). 78% of institutions not currently conducting HTA claimed demand for HTA specialists. CONCLUSIONS: There is high demand for HTA proffesionals in CESE countries. Potential studens percieve HTA as the opportunity for professional development. MSc in HTA curriculum that fits specificity of CESE is highly required.
