PURPOSE: Pharmacoeconomic simulation modeling is designed to inform medical decision making and health care resource allocation. The ISPOR-SMDM Modeling Good Research Practices Task Force published a multitude of best practices surrounding selecting the appropriate model that fits the purpose as well as detailed aspects of model validation and transparency. On the muddy ground of modeling practice, many questions remain. The purpose of this workshop will be to distill pragmatic approaches to navigate many day-to-day decisions surrounding economic modeling including: patient versus cohort-level model choices, model validation procedures, and model transparency and sharing for resource allocation and reimbursement decisions. Participants will gain and actively engage in practical tips for navigating economic modeling that achieves feasibility, transparency, and validity. DESCRIPTION: This workshop will offer participants insights in understanding the key recommendations for model good practices around choosing between a patient-level or cohort-level model, model validation, and model transparency and sharing. Discussion leaders will draw from diverse modeling guidelines, good practices, and experiences that gear participants toward practical and high-quality model building and model use. Dr. Kalo will begin with the end in mind and remind participants of the purpose and uses of pharmacoeconomic models. Dr. Campbell will provide participants with a practical set of criteria that aid the selection of a patient-level versus cohort-level model. Dr. Nagy will share a user-friendly model validation checklist that follows good research practices yet remains feasible. Finally, Dr. McQueen will suggest solutions toward navigating model transparency and model sharing to aid resource allocation decisions. The target audience for this workshop is anyone currently involved or planning to be involved in the conduct of pharmacoeconomic modeling. After actively engaging in real-time polling, participants will leave the workshop with a feasible implementation guide that navigates toward the efficient and high-quality practices of pharmacoeconomic modeling.
