ASSESSMENT OF PRESCRIPTION PATTERN OF DISCHARGE MEDICATIONS IN MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION PATIENTS IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL IN SOUTH INDIA.

OBJECTIVES: To study the prescription pattern of cardiac drugs and non-cardiac drugs in Myocardial Infraction (MI) patients in a tertiary care hospital in South Indian.

METHODS: This is a retrospective cross-sectional study were 282 patient records from 2012 to 2014 were collected from September 2017 to march 2017, details about their discharge summary were collected from the inpatient case records from Medical Records Department (MRD).SPSS software were used to do the descriptive analysis of the obtained data.The study was started after obtaining Ethical Clearance from the IEC committee.

RESULTS: The average age of study population was found to be 60.19±11.47 years. Subjects of age group 46-65 years (59.80%) were found to be more susceptible to MI and majority of them were males (74.6%). Average number of cardiac drugs per patient were 8. Anti-platelet(92.09%) and lipid lowering drugs (91.48%) were the highest prescribed cardiac drugs followed by B blockers(49.29%),ACE inhibitors(45.03%), Nitrates(44.32%), diuretics(32.97%), Angiotensin Receptor Blocker (13.47), Calcium Channel Blocker(7.44%), Anticoagulants(3.90%), cardiac glycosides(3.90%), alpha-blockers(2.48%), Anti-arrhythmic(2.48%) and anti-anginal drugs(1.06%).

CONCLUSIONS: It was observed that the prescription of drugs was according to AHA guidelines.The study provides a valuable reference data on the prescription pattern of drugs in myocardial infraction patients in South Indian population.
