ADVENT OF MOBILE PLATFORMS LEVERAGES MULTISTAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION TO DRIVE OUTCOMES IN DIABETES

OBJECTIVES

:
Active patient participation and contribution in their disease management is essential in ensuring adherence and achieving successful outcomes, particularly in chronic diseases. Today, the advent of platform-based solutions has created an opportunity to leverage data to influence behaviours and improve treatment and disease management. This study investigates the level of manufacturer participation in creating data-driven technologies and platform solutions, specifically within diabetes.

METHODS

:
A review of the literature and a market scan of leading pharmaceutical company programs in the diabetes space was conducted. In addition, publicly available information was collected related to multi-stakeholder collaborations to develop platform based solutions. Each solution was characterized by stakeholder participant, the role of manufacturers specifically, objective of the platform approach, data exchange details, technology leveraged, degree to which outcomes impact coverage or care pathways, and controls.

RESULTS

:
Multiple platforms in the diabetes space were identified and characterized. Mobile delivery and personalized digital engagement were consistent attributes of programs identified and platforms developed. Of the leading solutions available, 3 are focused on being technologically driven in treatment and disease management within diabetes. Four solutions are focused on leveraging platform-based approaches to provide disease-agnostic solutions. The platforms with the most significant impact on patient experience were not driven by manufacturers, though several had manufacturer participation.

CONCLUSIONS

:
There is a significant shift in investment and a positive outlook towards platform-based models of disease management, particularly in diabetes. Manufacturers are participating but not yet leading the development of top solutions. Mobile platforms are preferred as it increases accessibility for all stakeholders and facilitates real-time data collection and storage. As the industry continues to embrace platform-based solutions to drive outcomes, manufacturers should continue their investment in mobile-based, data-driven solutions to treat and manage chronic diseases while leveraging a multi-stakeholder, collaboration based approach.
