OBJECTIVES

: This study evaluated whether a schizophrenia P4P program is associated with patient satisfaction and whether a patient’s perception of patient-centered care (PCC) serves as a mediator in this relationship.

METHODS

Data were collected from patient surveys and record reviews from 2 hospitals between November 2016 and June 2017. We gathered PCC information from three questionnaires including the Health Care Climate Questionnaire (HCCQ), the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care (PACIC), and the Picker PCC Questionnaire. We also gathered information on patient satisfaction from the Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire (PSQ) and then accounted for schizophrenia patient characteristics, including age, gender, education, occupation, and severity, and hospital factor. We used mediation analysis as well as generalized estimation equation (GEE) analyses for all of these regressions. All regressions used propensity score weighting (PSW) with an inverse probability weighting to weight patients who belonged to the P4P group and those who belonged to comparison groups separately.

RESULTS

: The findings indicated that P4P program participation was significantly associated with patient satisfaction (parameter=4.49, P=0.003); however, when PCC was added to the model, P4P program participation was no longer significantly associated with patient satisfaction, and the beta value was substantially lower (parameter=1.40, P =0.32). The results showed that P4P program participation was significantly associated with patient satisfaction and that PCC fully mediated this relationship

CONCLUSIONS

: This schizophrenia P4P program promotes patient satisfaction via PCC-oriented strategies and activities.
