PERCEPTIONS OF SELF-MEDICATION PRACTICES AND AWARENESS REGARDING ITS COMPLICATIONS- A COMMUNITY –BASED STUDY

OBJECTIVES:

This study was aimed to investigate the association between the perceptions of self-medication practices and awareness regarding its complications among the residents of an urban community.

METHODS:

A cross-sectional, observational study was carried out among 270 randomly selected participants in an urban area of Bangalore, India. A semi-structured pre-validated questionnaire was used to collect the data. Statistical analysis was performed. Logistic Regression was used for drawing statistical inferences.

RESULTS: CONCLUSIONS:

This study mainly focused on understanding the subjects’ level of attitude towards self-medication practices and knowledge regarding its complications. Inspite of having good knowledge regarding the risks associated with self-medications, the respondents had a positive approach towards practice of the same. This study depicts the importance of promoting awareness to the public regarding safe and responsible use of self-medication.
