PURPOSE: Dementia is caused by various diseases and conditions that result in damaged brain cells, leading to a loss or decline in cognitive abilities and associated disability and dependency. Economic considerations play an important role in financing the diagnosis, treatment and care programs for people with dementia and their caregivers. A large number of evaluations (100+) have been conducted to assess the cost-effectiveness of dementia interventions. The results and conclusions often varied and contrasted, depending on perspectives, modelling choices, and clinical and economic end-points. This workshop will provide an overview of the state of the art of model-based evaluation in dementia, discuss major challenges in the selection and measurement of clinical and economic outcomes, and highlight some future directions.
DESCRIPTION: The workshop will start with TC and JW discussing existing approaches to model-based economic evaluations for dementia treatment. They will touch on the two ongoing collaborative projects investigating the real world evidence to address the challenges in economic evaluation and funding for dementia care (ROADMAP), and modelling outcome and cost impacts of interventions for dementia (MODEM-UK). BM will extend the outcome topic by providing a critical perspective on the estimation of QALYs for use in dementia models, and discussing issues with the sensitivity of the instruments used to measure quality of life, providing methodological perspectives on the elicitation of dementia specific utility values. KHN will advocate for the use of dynamic modelling methods to capture the disease complexity and interactions between patients, informal caregivers and service providers, for whom the clinical and economic trade-offs will be explicitly demonstrated. This approach may allow for better incorporation of real-world data for external and internal validation. The workshop will include an extended interactive Q&A session, during which the audience will have the opportunity to discuss aspects of dementia modelling with the panel.
