OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is growing at a rapid pace globally, affecting 700,000 to several million patients annually. One of the catastrophic results of AMR is the creation of superbugs which are multidrug resistant. In order to combat AMR, pharmacists should play an integral role in ensuring judicial use of antimicrobials in community. This study was aimed to evaluate the perception and attitude of community pharmacists about antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) in Lahore, Pakistan. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted through administering a paper based questionnaire in March, 2017 among community pharmacists of Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan. Ten community pharmacies were selected from each town by convenience sampling approach. RESULTS: Out of 100 community pharmacists (CPs), 81% were male, 58% had an experience in between 1 to 4 years and 78% were in 21 to 30 years’ age group. 72% pharmacists were not familiar with the word “antimicrobial stewardship”. Majority of the CPs (77%) were aware that antibiotics are not effective against common cold. More than half of the CPs indicated that excessive and improper uses of antibiotics are the main causes of antibiotic resistance. Only 13% CPs think that physicians always prescribe right antibiotics to treat infection. 45% CPs consider that antimicrobials are over used in all national healthcare systems. 89% CPs agreed that ASP can facilitate judicial use of antibiotics. 93% and 83% CPs said that pharmacist must play their role in ASP and it should be implemented in all community settings respectively. 88% CPs agreed that health of patients can be significantly improved by ASP. CONCLUSIONS: Positive attitude and perception of community pharmacists towards ASP was observed. Government should take initiative to implement this program and training before the implementation will further help in accomplishing the desired objectives.
