OBJECTIVES: Despite evidence that severe asthma patients are associated with intensive medical resources utilization (MRU), the cost drivers of high asthma expenditure in China remain unclear. The study therefore aimed to explore impact factors in order to better understand the economic burden of Chinese population suffered from asthma. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted using Chinese sampled national claim database. Patients aged 6 years and above with primary diagnosis of asthma and asthma-related medical visit/hospitalization from Jan 1 to Feb 28, 2015 were included to track annual costs. Medications were used as a proxy per the GINA and China guidelines to identify asthma severity (i.e. mild, moderate, and severe). The association of annual MRU costs with various potential factors was tested using univariate analysis. Multivariate linear regression model were conducted to identify MRU cost drivers. RESULTS: The multivariate model identified age, live region, severe complications, severity, and uncontrolled status as independent cost drivers.
CONCLUSIONS: Older severe uncontrolled asthma patients with critical complications in middle China tend to have higher asthma annual expenditure of MRU. Frequent exacerbation leads to the highest severe asthma cost despite small patient group affected.
