OBJECTIVES: To assess the factors influence physicians to different types of sedative medication in the elderly.

METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted in the hospitalized patients aged ≥60 in West China hospital of S.U. between 2010 and 2015. Participants treated with sedative drugs, including benzodiazepines and Z substances were included. Logistics regression model was used to examine the factors regarding the demographic characteristics, residents department, diseases and comorbidity affected the choice of different types of sedative medication. Disease classification was in accordance with ICD-10.

RESULTS

: CONCLUSIONS

: The sedative medication was commonly used in the elderly with high risk of fall, cognitive impairment, the choice of different sedative medication was affected by sex, age, residents department and various diseases, which may not the indicators for clinical use, the appropriateness of sedative medication used in the elderly need to be evaluated in the further study.
