OBJECTIVES: the study aims to understand the extent of extravasation and the possible associated risk factors. METHODS: A prospective, descriptive, cross sectional study is being conducted in patients with known histological malignancies, who received at least one parenteral chemotherapy and experienced the extravasation injuries from August 2017 to February 2018. Patients are followed from the day of admission till their discharge during ward rounds. Detailed patient’s and patient care-taker’s interview are being conducted and data is being documented in suitably designed data bases and subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS version 20.0. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients were admitted to the wards of which 67 patients fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Among the 67 patients reviewed, 8(12%) patients experienced extravasation injuries induced by parenteral chemotherapy. 100% of the extravasation injuries were categorized as grade 2 according to CTCAE 4.3 (Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events). Among them 5(63%) were male and 3(37%) were female. 38% patients were above 60 years of age. 73.33% of the suspected drugs were classified as irritants (such as Platin salts and 5-Fluoro Uracil) by European Society of Medical Oncology- European Oncology Nursing Society guidelines. With the current study data, age is a predisposing factor OR 2.3 (0.1 – 10.4). CONCLUSIONS: The current study initiated by the clinical pharmacy students, an incidence of 12% was observed in the study. Early detection and reporting of Extravasation Injuries has helped in reducing the further progression and associated complications. Further, the data collected until February 2018 will be analyzed and presented at the conference.
