CROSS CULTURAL STUDY TO PREDICT ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT OF MALAYSIAN AND THAILAND PHARMACY STUDENTS 2017

OBJECTIVES: METHODS: A cross-cultural cross-sectional study was conducted to compare the healthy lifestyle between 606 pharmacy students from year 1 until year 3 of pharmacy students from Management & Science University, Malaysia and Burapha University, Thailand and their academic achievements. The survey was self-administered to all students with items measuring healthy lifestyle using personal factor, health promoting profile II, multi-dimensional scale of perceive social support and cumulative grade point average (CGPA). RESULTS: Consistency of these scales was assessed for internal reliability with Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient. The internal consistency (Cronbach alpha r) of all three scales used in this study were >.7 which yield R >.50. All scales could measure > 50% of true score. Total of 410 students, 105 Malaysian students and 327 Thailand students completed the questionnaire. Data was analysed using Hierarchical Step-wise Multiple Regression Analysis. There were significant correlation between four independent variable (country, year of study; 2nd year, drinking habits, depression) to predict dependent variable (CGPA) with magnitude -0.433, -0.102, -0.225, and +0.167 respectively. Only three independent variable (country, year of study, drinking habit) were significant predictor of CGPA. The model yielded R=0.490 and R=0.240. Country was the most significant predictor of CGPA with β= -0.597. CONCLUSIONS: Difference in country such as Thailand and Malaysia is the biggest impact on academic achievements and three significant predictors of CGPA were country, year of study and drinking habits. This paper aims to evidently add more knowledge on the importance of healthy lifestyle on academic achievements of the particular university students also to identify issues examining whether comparing college lifestyle in Malaysia and Thailand provide more complex issue than merely just healthy lifestyle and CGPA.
