OBJECTIVES

: The study was aimed to assess the influence of pharmacist mediated patient education on diet, lifestyle modifications and health related quality of life in asthma patients.

METHODS

: This prospective, Block randomized, intervention study was conducted over a period of 6 months. Study patients were randomized in to test and control group. At baseline follow-up spirometer values i.e. (FEV and FVC) and AQLQ were recorded. The test group patients received the education regarding disease, medication, diet and lifestyle modifications. At baseline and each follow-up, FEV and FVC were recorded at baseline, first, second and final follow-up. Health related quality of life was assessed using suitable questionnaire (AQLQ)-32.

RESULTS

: A total of 90 eligible patients were recruited into the study and randomized into test (45) and control (45). In the control group, 18 (40%) patients were male and 27 (60%) patients were female. In the test group, 23 (51%) patients were male and 22 (49%) patients were female. The minimum age of the patients was 21 years and maximum age of enrolled patients was 80 years. Among the patients completed all the follow-ups, majority patients are self-employed (34%) from agriculture profession or from business profession. At baseline recruiting the patients, spirometer test (FEV, FVC) was conducted to know the asthma status of the enrolled patients. The mean FEV and FVC values was recorded in both test and control groups. A significant (p<0.05) improvement in health related quality of life was observed in all test group patients from baseline to final follow-up. Statistically significant (p<0.05) change in FEV and FVC was observed in all test group patients from first-final follow-up, compared to control group patients.

CONCLUSIONS

: This study concludes that clinical pharmacist’s educational interventions had a positive impact on the understanding and self-management of asthma patients which helps in improving their health related quality of life.
