ANTIBIOTIC STEWARDSHIP IMPACT ON APPROPRIATE INITIATION OF ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of the antmicorbial stewardship in the improvement of appropriate antibiotic prescribing at King slaman Military hospital in Saudi Atabia. METHODS: Over 6 month period (September 2017 to February 2018) we randomly reviewed 854 medication orders of patients receiving antibiotic therapy observing the adherence to the appropriate initiation criteria for antibiotic therapy (start date visible, stop date visible, indication shown, appropriate specimen obtained prior to therapy imitation, and the patient prescribed the right antibiotic dose to be administered at the right intervals) We noticed fluctuation in adherence to the appropriate imitation of antibiotic therapy. RESULTS: Considering the documentation of the start date of therapy initiation we reached 100% compliance, however documentation of the antibiotic therapy duration was only we noticed variations although noticeable improvement was shown on last two month (January 66.9% and February 57%). The indication for the antibiotic therapy was shown only on 49% of the orders reviewed at the beginning (September) but gradually increased to reach 66% on February. Collection of specimens for culture and sensitivity reached 93% by February although started with a percentage of 59% on September. About 93% patients in average received the antibiotic dose at the right interval. CONCLUSIONS: The study concluded that, having an antimicrobial stewardship in a hospital improves the appropriate prescribing of antibiotics and collaboration with all healthcare professional can further influence the effectiveness of the an antibiotic stewardship team.
