OBJECTIVES: There is limited evidence for the association between use of sulfonylurea and the risk of cardiovascular disease in diabetic women. We aimed to retrospectively assess the prevalence  of sulfonylurea induced cardiovascular diease in type 2 diabetic women in a tertiary care hospital. METHODS: This was a retrospective case- control study on Type 2 diabetic women  who were diagnosed during 2010-2015 presenting to a tertiary care hospital. Sulfonylurea use leading to cardiovascular (CV) primary event were identified. RESULTS: A total of 430 type 2 diabetic women were enrolled in the study.Out of which 150 patients were diabetic with cardiovascular events(cases)and 280 were diabetic without cardiovascular event (controls). 45.3% of cases were on sulfonylureas whereas 26.4% of controls were on sulfonylureas. CONCLUSIONS: Long term use of sulfonylureas was related with a significantly higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease among type 2 diabetic women.
