OBJECTIVES: Asthma reached 1.77% of total death in Indonesia and its population was in the 19th rank over the world in 2014. Due to its chronic condition, asthma may influence patients’ quality of life caused by limitation of physical activity, social function and psychological condition. The objective of this study is to determine asthma patients’ quality of life using Short Formulary-36 questionnaire. METHODS: We conducted cross sectional study and recruited 74 adult asthma patients in a private asthma clinic. We asked the patients to be the participants by informed consent procedures and asked them to fill in SF-36 questionnaire. We also recruited 167 adult healthy subjects to fill in the SF-36 questionnaire. The Indonesian version of SF-36 has been validated in asthma patients and in health subjects, previously. Our study has been approved by Ethic Committee of University of Ahmad Dahlan, Yogyakarta. Furthermore, data of patients’ characteristic was collected from patients’ medical record. We performed statistical analysis to compare the asthma patients’ quality of life with health subjects’ quality of life. RESULTS: Our study shows that most of the patients are more than 30 yo (56%) and most of them are female (80%). There are significant differences between asthma patients and normal subjects in all domains of quality of life (p<0.005). The average of  physical, emotional, social, vitality, pain and general health of asthma patients vs health subjects are; 62.50 vs 92.96; 74.86 vs 76.11; 61.79 vs 75.33; 59.12 vs 68.98; 72.97 vs 78.54; 52.29 vs 70.06, respectively. All domains’ scores of asthma patients are lower than domains’ score of health subjects. CONCLUSIONS: Our study found that asthma may interfere patients’ quality of life. The domains’ scores of asthma patients’ quality of life are significantly lower than domains’ scores of health subjects. Further study should be done to determine factors that may influence asthma patients’ quality of life.
