OBJECTIVES: The neuropathic pain is common complication  in spinal cord injury and interferes with rehabilitation treatment. Currently, acupuncture is used to relieve pain. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture treatment for neuropathic pain in SCI patients. METHODS: This study was a prospective observational clinical trial conducted from February 2014 to December 2014. SCI inpatients with neuropathic pain in National Rehabilitation Center(NRC) were recruited. The institutional review board of the hospital approved the protocol (NRC-2014-02-011).Demographic characteristics, level of injury, American Spinal Injury Association(AISA) grade, Spinal Cord Independence Measure(SCIM) point, International Spinal Cord Injury Basic Pain Data Set(ISCIBPDS) were investigated at baseline. The primary outcome measure was Numeric Rating Scale(NRS) for the pain intensity. We investigated the treatment methods for relieving pain and assessed the NRS at every 2 weeks for 6 weeks. Adverse events were monitored throughout the study. The independent t-test was used for between group comparision(acupucnture group and non-acupuncture group). RESULTS: Seventy acupuncture treatment patients and 22 non-acupuncture treatment patients (only pharmacological treatment) were included in this study CONCLUSIONS: This study suggested that acupuncture can be considered in effective and safe treatment method for neuropathic pain of SCI patients.
