OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was the adaptation of the Chronic Liver disease questionnaire (CLDQ) for use in Korea. METHODS:The CLDQ was formally translated from the original version to Korean language with permission. The translation process included forward and back-translation by bilingual translators, cross-cultural adaptation with steering committee review and pilot testing. A total of 4087 patients with chronic hepatitis B virus were enrolled in the original study. All patients were asked to complete the translated versions of CLDQ and EQ5D. Information on demography, physical findings, and biochemical test results were collected. The validity was assessed by the associations with the utility index of EQ-5D Korean version. Cronbach’s alpha was calculated. Pearson’s correlation was used to assess convergent validity. P-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS:Among 4087 patients, 3545 completed both EQ-5D and CLDQ and are included in this analysis. The study patients’ characteristics were: mean age (±SD), 43.5±11.74 years; 28% female; 13% with concomitant disease; 86% chronic hepatitis B alone. Cronbach's alpha of the overall CLDQ scores was 0.97 and the alpha scores for the six subscales ranged from 0.83-0.93. The significant correlations were found between Korean version of CLDQ and EQ-5D (r=0.60, p <0.001) and VAS (r=0.5, p <0.001). CONCLUSIONS:The CLDQ Korean version was applicable to measure of quality of life in Korean patients with chronic hepatitis B virus.
