OBJECTIVES: Ever since July 2013, the prices for medicines in India have been regulated by the DPCO, 2013. The multiplicity of formulations available in the market leaves a big gap for the end user to choose. The list of essential medicines has been revised and has become public as NLEM 2015. This study was an attempt to study the prices of essential drugs added in the NLEM 2015. METHODS: The study was based on capturing the lowest and the highest prices of the drugs added in the NLEM 2015. The prices of 57 drugs were obtained from the current edition of a commonly used reference by the practitioners. The ratios of the highest to lowest prices were computed. RESULTS: Of the prices of 57 drugs examined in this study, a very high number of drugs had a ratio of 1. However, the ratios for some of the drugs ranged from as small as 2 to as high as 48. Such a variation needs to be addressed to make the drugs reasonably priced. CONCLUSIONS: The prices of drugs added in the NLEM 2015 have been largely uniform. However, there are areas that require intervention by the policy makers and other stakeholders.
