ISSUE: MCDA is gaining interest for a number of applications in healthcare but the challenges and opportunities to adapt this method to the specificities of the field of healthcare are subject to controversy. OVERVIEW: MCDA is an application of decision analytics to help decisionmakers to explicitly consider multiple criteria and include a variety of methods. Progress has been made, including by the ISPOR MCDA task force, identified principles of good practice for MCDA in healthcare. Though these efforts have identified controversies and areas for further research (e.g., how to incorporate cost or uncertainty). The panel will address these controversies by sharing content from a 2-day workshop attended by MCDA experts from around the world. Current scope of applications in healthcare decisionmaking. The debate will explore whether MCDA can provide a way to change the paradigm in healthcare decisionmaking, and will be structured as follows: 1) challenges to which solutions are required before MCDA can change the healthcare decision making paradigm in real life will be explored  including, confusion about what is meant by MCDA, insufficient attendance to the nature of healthcare problems by MCDA, insufficient awareness of decisionmakers about the biases and implications facing decisions; 2) opportunities of MCDA to support the paradigm change needed by decisionmakers to tackle real life ethical dilemmas will be discussed including for: patients to achieve best health; clinicians to reconcile patients’ needs with institutional constraints; regulators to protect populations; payers/ministries to achieve the triple aim (patient, population, cost); and industry to align business with the triple aim; 3) Real life experience on the challenges and opportunities of implementing MCDA based processes at the country level will be discussed. These points will be debated during an interactive session with the audience to explore whether or not MCDA can contribute to a paradigm change in healthcare decisionmaking.
