OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Parkinson disease (PD) in Czech Republic (CR) is about 30 000 cases. One of modern approaches of treatment for especially severe PD forms is levodopa/carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG). There was no study published about the impact of LCIG on quality of life (QoL) and work ability (WA) in patients with PD in Czech Republic. METHODS: The primary method used for the analysis of QoL was the combined questionnaire consisting of 6 parts: A. Demography, B. Quality of life. C. Clinical part. D. Socio-economic part. E. PDQ-8. Symptoms and relations to QoL. 132 patients were treated by oral standardized therapy (group A) and 44 patients were treated by LCIG (group B). QoL and WA were evaluated on numeric scale from 1-the worst to 10-the best. T-test, Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests and Spearman correlation were used. RESULTS: The significant statistical differencies in QoL were found out in group A opposite to group B dutring the life period without PD (8,0 vs 8,7), during the time of diagnosis (5,6 vs 5,5) and during the time of full treatment (4,1 vs 4,9) and the same results were gained in WA (8,0 vs 9,2, resp. 4,7 vs 5,2, resp. 2,9 vs 2,7). The results from QoL and WA were in strong correlation. Foreknowledge of disease (1-the worst, 5-the best) was significant better in group B (3,0 vs 3,9) and equally in satisfaction with medical care (3,1 vs 4,3) nad nursing care (3,0 vs 4,2). QoL was higher in group treated by LCIG. WA is feeling inferior as QoL. CONCLUSIONS: PD had a significant impact on patients´s QoL and AW. There are significant differencies in duration of PD and its symptoms before diagnosis in LCIG and oral treatment group. The treatment by LCIG seems to bring the positive benefit in QoL and AW for PD patients.
