Women with breast cancer suffer a mutilating surgery as mastectomy, the most of them perceive the reconstruction as a benefit for their quality of life. The surgical procedure for reconstruction has proven be safe and with a low complication rate OBJECTIVES: Determine the impact of mammary reconstruction on health related quality of life in women with mastectomy secondary to breast cancer in the west of Mexico METHODS: Were studied 30 women with mammary reconstruction after radical mastectomy secondary to breast cancer. Were interviewed through the questionnaire REC-MAM_CPR, and were analyzed the modules: physical aspect, social environment, sexual function and breast symptoms. The scores were constructed with multi-ítem scales. The scores were obtained through linear transformation to get a score 0 to 100, for all modules the high score was related to a better quality of life, except to symptoms. For this module a high score was related to worse quality of life. RESULTS: Physical aspect pre-reconstruction score was 33.61(±20.12) compared with 78.89 (±32.15; p 0.000), score after reconstruction. For social and sexual aspects the situation was similar(48.06 ±21.07 versus 83.43 ±31.9; p 0.000 y 33.57 ±21.19 versus 80.42 ±31.26; p 0.000, respectively). In the symptoms the high score was observed previous to reconstruction (32.02 ±23.19 versus 12.68 ±15.95; p 0.000). CONCLUSIONS: The mammary reconstruction impact positively on health related quality of life in women who are breast cáncer survivors. Questionaires adapted to Mexican population are useful to evaluate these aspects
