OBJECTIVES: Uterine fibroids (UF) are associated with heavy menstrual bleeding and pain symptoms that could affect productivity. This research evaluates work productivity loss due to UF in US. METHODS: Three online respondent panels were used to field a cross-sectional survey among US women aged 18-54 between August and October 2012. The survey had two parts: A prevalence screener completed by all women; and a UF-specific portion which was completed by women who reported UF diagnosis or UF-related symptoms. UF-related productivity losses were assessed by Health-Related Productivity Questionnaire (HRPQ) modified for UF. T-tests and ANOVA examined the impact of experiencing UF-related symptoms and self-rated overall UF symptoms severity on productivity loss among UF patients who have not undergone hysterectomy weighting data to represent US women. RESULTS: Final analytic sample included 873 UF patients with mean age of 43 years (SE=0.39). Black/African American and white patients represented 24% and 60.9% of the sample respectively. The mean of weekly scheduled work hours was 37 hours. UF patients reported losing an average of 5.1 work hours per week due to UF (0.76 hours due to absenteeism and 4.38 hours due to presenteeism) which represented a loss of 14.1% of scheduled work hours. UF patients who reported bleeding symptoms experienced more total productivity hours lost compared to patients not experiencing the symptoms (heavy bleeding during period: 6.9 vs. 3.6 hours; passage of clots: 8.0 vs. 3.4 hours; spotting/bleeding between periods: 7.5 vs. 4.5 hours; all p<0.05). UF patients with self-rated severe UF symptoms had higher number of productivity hours lost compared to women with moderate (12.1 vs.7.7 hours, p=0.088) or mild UF symptoms (12.1 vs. 2.7 hours, p=0.0002). CONCLUSIONS: UF patients experience sizable work-related productivity losses through presenteeism and absenteeism. Experiencing bleeding symptoms or severe UF symptoms was associated with greater work-related productivity losses.
