OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to assess the extent of the fear of death if the respondents are a nurse or a hospice nurse and if religion and age have an influence on the fear of death. METHODS: We did a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study at Szekszárd, Pécs, Decs and Sárpilis. During non-randomized convenience sampling, hospice nurses, nurses and laymen between 18 and 65 years of age were in the target group. During examination the extent of the fear of death we used the standardised Neimeyer and Moore's Multidimensional Fear of Death Scale. Beside the descriptive statistics we used χ2-test, t-test and ANOVA (p<0,05) with the help of the SPSS 22. program. RESULTS: The respondents' biggest fear is that one of their loved ones suddenly die (1.77 average point). Based on the total score of the MFODS the age and the death of fear did not show a significant difference (p> 0.05), but the youngest respondents, those between 18 and 25 years of age are the most afraid of death (p=0.012). The level of education affects the extent of the fear of death, since the elementary school and college graduates average scores are significantly higher (p <005), that means they are the least afraid of death. During the statistical analysis we didn't experience correlation between the religious life and the degree of fear of death (p>0.05). There was a significant difference between nurses (n=61, MFODS: 122.36 point) and hospice nurses (n=36, MFODS: 133.31 point), the hospice nurses' fear of death was lower (p=0.04). CONCLUSIONS: The overall results show that most are afraid that one of their loved ones suddenly die. In this sample the hospice nurses are less afraid of death than other nurses. The mental hygiene further training (supervision, Balint-group) is important for the medical staff.
