ASSESSMENT OF DISEASE-STATE KNOWLEDGE IN HYPERTENSIVE PATIENTS IN QUETTA, PAKISTAN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the disease state knowledge of hypertensive patients of attending tertiary care public hospitals in Quetta Pakistan. METHODS: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted to evaluatethe knowledge by using Self-administered questionnaire which comprises of demographic characteristics and 21 disease state knowledge questions. All the registered patients attending two major hospitals of Quetta city (Bolan Medical Complex hospital and Provincial Sandmen hospital) from April to October, 2015. Descriptive analysis to demonstrate patients’ demographics. Inferential statistics (Mann-Whitney and Kruskal Wallis test, p<0.05) were used to differentiate or relate the study variables. RESULTS: A total of 273 questionnaires were agreed to participate in study during the study period. The result showed that majority of respondents 52.0% were female with majority 30.8%  were Illiterate and 35.2% were having Government job. Majority of respondents 80.6% have adequate knowledge regarding their disease i.e. hypertension. Adequate knowledge score were statistically significant associated with majority of demographic characteristics i.e. locality, ethnicity, education level, occupation and income (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The results of study showed that hypertensive patients have adequate knowledge regarding their disease. The findings showed that most of patients are aware towards the disease knowledge and its management to overcome further hypertensive problem or risk of other diseases.
