SATISFACTION OF KIDNEY STONES DISEASE PATIENTS IN MALAYSIA- A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

OBJECTIVES : The study aims to explore the patients’ satisfaction with the management of kidney stones disease to give an insight on the influence of social aspects, perceptions and patients’ satisfaction toward their stones management; how far patients are satisfied with their disease management, what do they do to improve pain relief, how the disease affecting their quality of life.

METHODS : This study is a qualitative study, phenomenological approach. Qualitative research method allows greater capacity to procure deeper and clearer data based on an individual’s experiences along with their satisfaction and perception towards the treatments given. The samples were recruited by purposive sampling, patients diagnosed with kidney stones above 18 years old were included. Data had been collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with patients. Interviews conducted in the Malaysian language, the voice-recorded interviews were verbatim transcribed and translated. Content analysis was carried out by coding and closely studying the transcribed interviews to identify the main themes and achieve the objectives of the research.

RESULTS : CONCLUSIONS : The satisfaction of pain management towards the treatment of kidney stones is associated with many aspects including opinions of patients on effectiveness of treatment and medications, their conditions after the treatment, perceptions towards the treatments, preferences on the types of treatment and the effects of medicine. The relationship between each of the themes and the satisfaction towards the pain management of the kidney stones disease patients
